Regional Tournament - Game 2

Nov 01, 2011 |

Michigan played Indiana University in their second game of the day. Indiana was coming off a 3-0 victory over Grand Valley meaning Michigan needed a win to ensure progression in the tournament. With both teams having played earlier in the day, the game lacked defensive effort and the game had counter attack after counter attack. Indiana tended to launch the ball forward to their strikers who were able to run onto the ball well and get in behind the Michigan defense. Tired legs led to sloppy control and Michigan wasn't able to maintain their usual amount of possession as passes were often off the mark. Michigan still had goal opportunities and there were a few occassions were Michigan had the ball in the box and could not put the ball in the net as Indiana packed 7 or 8 defenders in the box and made several blocks and stops to keep the ball out. Michigan was made to pay for not putting the all in the net as a corner kick for Indiana was cleared out to the next line of defense, where another cross was floated in and Indiana headed home to get a 1-0 lead late in the game. Needing two goals, Michigan pushed everyone forward but was unable to break down the Indiana defense. This was Michigan's first loss of the season and they are now looking to secure an at-large bid to Nationals as they failed to secure a guaranteed bid at Regionals.

Regional Tournament - Game 1

Nov 01, 2011 |

Michigan headed down to Indianapolis on Friday to prepare for Regional play on Saturday morning. Originally scheduled to play UW-MIlwaukee, the team found out late Wednesday that Milwaukee declined their bid and Michigan would again be playing GVSU in a replay of their regular season finale. Michigan improved on their result from the first meeting, winnning the Regional game 3-1 with a dominating performance. Michigan held possesion for the majority of the game and the breakthrough came when John Berra played a neat one-two with Cory VonAchen on the edge of the box and put the return pass into the side netting. In the second half Berra then won a penalty which was netted by Ben Manko to put Michigan up 2-0. The third goal came from a counter attack with Berra sending Hugo Taubmann through on goal and Taubmann finished well.

Regional Tournament POSTPONED

Oct 20, 2011 |

Due to large amounts of standing water rendering the fields unplayable, the Regional tournament has been postponed to the weekend of 10/29 and 10/30. There will no changes in the scheduled game times.

Division Standings and Regionals

Oct 18, 2011 | Matthew Bart

For the third year in a row, the Wolverines have topped the Central Division. They accumulated a total of 87 out of 100 possible points with a final regular season record of 9-0-1, and are headed to the Regional tournament in Indianapolis, IN this upcoming weekend. Michigan is the #2 overall team in terms of power ranking, and they hope to come back from Indianapolis with a bid to the National tournament in Phoenix, AZ this November.

Match Report - IUSB and GVSU

Oct 18, 2011 | Matthew Bart

Michigan added 10 points towards their power ranking as they secured an 11-0 win against IUSB.

Michigan led the GVSU Lakers 1-0 until they scored on a free kick 25 yards out. The 1-1 tie gave the wolverines 3 points.

Match Report - Michigan State

Oct 18, 2011 | Matthew Bart

Michigan secured a 1-0 victory over Michigan State. Many opportunities were present for both teams. The wolverines scored on a corner kick served by Cory VonAchen. Baker Cronin was replaced due to a "tackle" resulting in a swollen, bloody nose.

Match Report - Central Michigan

Oct 18, 2011 | Matthew Bart

Michigan had several players missing this match, which was costly in such a physical game. Despite the poor field quality, the wolverines were able to continue their dominance in the midfield. Michigan found a breakthrough following a good run of play where a rebound fell to a defender to neatly volley home.

Match Reports - Eastern and Butler

Oct 18, 2011 | Matthew Bart

The wolverines secured a 6-0 win at the new EMU soccer complex. They also added 10 points towards their power ranking in a disappointing forfeit for the match against Butler.

Match Report - Valpo

Sep 27, 2011 | Matthew Bart

Michigan came out strongly against a weak Valparaiso side, ensuring the maximum points early on without too much of a fight back. Cory VonAchen was pulling the strings from midfield as Michigan was able to work the wide spaces and put dangerous balls into the box. Michigan opened the scoring through this area, with John Anderton coming inside and putting a strong shot on the goal. The Valparaiso keeper couldn't handle it and the ball rebounded to Tommy Hazen who headed home the opener. Michigan continued to use it's advantage in the flanks and the ball continued to find the back of the net. Several different people got their names on the scoresheet: Paul Al-attar, Rob Vanderpluijm, Anderton, VonAchen, John Berra among them. The game lost some enthusiasm in the second half as it was well in hand but Michigan did not become complacent and was able to secure 10 points.

Purdue Game

Sep 18, 2011 | Matthew Bart

Following a hard fought win the night before, Michigan was a bit slow to get things going against Purdue. Fortunately the team's depth allowed for playing time to be given to every person on the roster. This allowed the team to get into its groove and begin to dominate proceedings in due time. Phil Presnell was pulling the strings from midfield and created a number of chances for Michigan, the clearest coming from a slaloming run past 3 Purdue defenders before pulling the ball back from Cory VonAchen, who was unable to finish from a tight angle. Purdue was able to create a few opportunities on the counter, the best forcing Baker Cronin into a fingertip save from a shot that looked destined for the top corner. Michigan eventually took the lead late in the first half with a scramble in the box following a corner falling to Presnell's feet and he stabbed home from close range. Michigan started the second half brightly, continuing it's dominance from the first half and continuing to create chances. With the Purdue goalkeeper looking susceptible to crosses, Michigan whipped a number of balls into the box form the flanks. The second goal resulted from a Tommy Hazen cross being fumbled by the goalkeeper and falling to Brent Zeitler's feet and he was able to stab home the goal into an empty net. Michigan was unable to secure a third goal but will have been satisfied with securing 9 points out of a possible 10, and 17/20 for the weekend, having faced 2 tough opponents.

Western Game

Sep 18, 2011 | Matthew Bart

In what may prove to be their toughest opponent of the regular season, Michigan was able to secure a 2-1 win on the road against Western Michigan. Things however started off poorly for the Wolverines, as Western Michigan opened the scoring within the first few minutes on a deflected free kick. A questionable handball call had been given on the edge of the box and the resulting free kick struck the wall, wrongfooting Baker Cronin in net and putting the Broncos up 1-0 early on. Michigan did not move stray from its game and proceeded to dominate possession and create chances throughout the first half. Right before the stroke of halftime, Michigan won a corner and Tommy Hazen put a drive across the box that Eric Zech pulled back from John Berra to nod home, knotting the contest at 1. Michigan continued it's dominance in the second half, creating a number of chances. Western Michigan however was able to earn a penalty on a counter attack and Michigan was lucky to see the kick hit the crossbar before being cleared away. Soon after Michigan took the lead for good as a cross came in that Tommy Hazen put back across the box and John Anderton was able to settle and finish into the bottom corner of the net.

Match Report - Ferris State

Sep 12, 2011 | Matthew Bart

In their first match of the new season, Michigan got off to a flying start winning 13-0 over Ferris State University. Several players found themselves on the score sheet as Berra, Presnell, Choi, Al-attar, O'Keefe, Taubmann, Zussman, and Scott all found the back of the net. Choi led the way by scoring on 4 different occasions. It was a fantastic way to begin the season as Michigan found its groove early on and secured the maximum 10 points on offer.

Michigan Finishes 10-0, Heading to Regionals

Oct 18, 2010 | Alex Wozniak

The Wolverines completed a perfect regular season schedule with a final record of ten wins and zero losses, with noteworthy victories over Michigan State (4-1) and Western Michigan (3-1) down the stretch. The team's depth proved vital in achieving this level of success throughout the first ten games, and will look to capitalize further on it going into next weekend's Regional tournament.

Michigan will face Cincinnati and Illinois in Regional group play next Saturday, as they look to seal a bid to the national tournament in November!

Wolverines Dominant in Central Victory

Sep 24, 2010 | Alex Wozniak

Michigan jumped off to a 3-0 record to start off the season with a recent 5-0 win over Central Michigan. Michigan spent little time to get on the scoreboard, with Tommy Hazen recording his first goal of the season within the first minute of play. Tallies from Nate Boyden, John Berra, Etienne Lussiez, and Phil Vanderwall topped off what was an undoubtedly dominant performance from the Wolverines.

The team is back in action next Wednesday when they face off against Eastern Michigan. Kickoff is 7PM at Churchill High School.

New Season Underway!

Sep 19, 2010 | Alex Wozniak

The Mens Club Soccer team started the 2010 campaign on the right foot with a 1-0 win over the Lakers of Grand Valley State University. Sophomore Etienne Lussiez netted the game winner off of a cross from Khalil Mroue with only minutes remaining, securing Blue a key victory. Michigan gets Final Four Finish

Dec 22, 2009 | Alex Wozniak

The mens club soccer team finished a great season with an appearance in the national Final Four in Phoenix, AZ, falling to the eventual national champion Weber State. Michigan played a solid tournament overall, with results as followed: 2-0 win over Florida; 0-0 tie against Delaware; 2-1 victory over Cal Poly; 2-0 win over Penn State (arguably the team's best performance of the season); followed by a 2-1 loss against Weber State in the semifinals.

The team would like to thank all of our families, friends, and fans for all of the support you provided us during the season. Without you, the success we gained this season would have been far from possible. Michigan fell behind early in the match against Purdue, but managed to take back control in the second half to secure the victory. Michigan edges Grand Valley

Oct 18, 2009 | Alex Wozniak

Goals by Alex Wozniak and Cory VonAchen were enough for U of M to earn a 2-1 victory over Grand Valley this Saturday. Michigan failed to capitalize on a number of chances in the first half, which led to a scoreless draw at the break. However, goals in the earlier portion of the second half gave Michigan a two goal cushion, and were able to hold on for the victory.

Michigan will wrap up the regular season this week with games against Western Michigan on Friday and Purdue on Sunday.

Blue Starts on Right Foot

Sep 13, 2009 | Alex Wozniak

U of M started off the 2009 campaign with a strong 3-0 win over Central Michigan. Both teams played a very strong first half, keeping the score at 0-0 going into halftime. However, the Maize and Blue took over the last 20 minutes of the game with three second half goals from Ike Odum, Cory VonAchen, and Alex Wozniak. Michigan received maximum league points for the shutout and three goal victory.

Blue hopes to continue where they left next weekend in an invitational weekend against Butler and IUSB. Games times are TBD.

Regular Season Ends with Tie to Broncos

Oct 29, 2008 | Alex Wozniak

The Wolverines finished out the regular season with a 0-0 tie against Western Michigan and Livonia Stevenson High School this past Sunday. Despite consistent back and forth action, neither team could find the back of the net.

U of M heads to the Regional tournament this weekend with matches against No. 1 ranked Ohio State and Purdue. Game times are Saturday 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, respectively.

UM Victorious over Spartans

Oct 23, 2008 | Alex Wozniak

The Wolverines defeated Michigan State by a score a 3-1 on Wednesday night, in what was arguably one of the best performances of the season. An early first half goal by Jason Riley got the Wolverines on track right from the start. Midway through the second half, Kevin Hall doubled the Wolverines' lead with a slick chip over the goalkeeper to the far side netting. The Wolverines took the lead and the momentum going into the second half.

The Spartans kept more of the ball throughout the second half and, as a result, were able to cut UM's lead about halfway through the second half. MSU had a chance to tie it up minutes later, but a clutch breakaway save from Matt Staton kept Blue in the lead. As the second half wound down, Tommy Hazen slid a ball behind the Spartan back line, where Alex Lumley bent the ball around the goalkeeper to seal the victory.

UMich will finish the regular season this Sunday (10/26) versus Western Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 AM at Livonia Stevenson High School. Directions can be found here.

Wolverines Fall to Purdue

U of M suffered their first setback of the season with a 2-1 loss to Purdue over the weekend. A goal by Justin Aramaki in the early stages of the second half put Blue up 1-0. However, a Boilermaker free kick and a rebound goal were enough to send Michigan home with a loss.

The Wolverines face a tough Michigan State side this Wednesday @ 8 PM in Howell. Directions will be posted prior to the match.

Wolverines 2-0 on the Weekend

Michigan added two to the win column with victories over Ferris State and Central Michigan this past weekend. Ike Odum proved to be the stand out player for the Wolverines, tallying a goal in both matches. Goals from Matt Hecker and John Courage also helped the Wolverines during a weekend where goals were difficult to come by.

MMCS would also like to thank the parents, friends, and fans that purchased t-shirts over the weekend. Your contributions to the team are greatly appreciated! If you are interested in purchasing a club soccer t-shirt ($10), feel free to contact us using our "Contact Us" page.

UM travels to Indianapolis this coming weekend for crucial matches against Miami and Purdue. Check back next week for the results!

UM Victorious over Grand Valley

Sep 29, 2008 | Alex Wozniak

In a hard fought, physical game from both teams, a goal from Kevin Hall halfway through the second half proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win on Sunday. Although the Wolverines saw more possession than the Lakers, Grand Valley's exceptional goalkeeping kept the Wolverines at bay for most of the game. The win brings the team's record to 4 wins and 1 tie on the season and still keeps their goals against stat at zero.

The team will go back in action on October 11th, when they will take on Ferris State for an 11 AM start at Eastern Michigan.

Blue Wins Two, Ties One

Sep 23, 2008 | Alex Wozniak

An overall successful weekend for the Wolverines has raised their record to 3 wins and 1 tie on the year. Starting on Thursday, the Wolverines took on their neighbor, Eastern Michigan. While it took awhile for the Maize and Blue to get going, a goal and an assist from Nico Fotieo led to a 4-0 victory.

On Saturday, Illinois came to town in a hard faught battle in Dexter. Questionable reffing led to a scrappy game, with action switching from one end to the other for a majority of the game. A Justin Aramaki penalty kick in the first half proved to be the difference in a 1-0 win for the Wolverines.

For the last game of the weekend, UM traveled to Bowling Green for a match up with Ohio University. Due to injuries, the Wolverines struggled to mount any sort of attack. While the game ended with a 0-0 draw, the Wolverines managed to keep their goals against at zero for the season.

Season Opener Victory over IUSB

Sep 14, 2008 | Alex Wozniak

In their season opener, the Michigan Club Soccer team defeated the Titans of Indiana University South Bend by a score of 16-0. Twelve Wolverines were included on the game's score sheet. The team will look to stick to their winning ways as they prepare for three games in four days starting this Thursday with Eastern Michigan, Saturday versus Illinois, and Sunday against Ohio.
